When it starts getting cold and summer signs start to vanish, it means winter is approaching. The quick approach of winter forces people to put their gardens to bed for the next several months. Winterizing does not only make your landscape look better all through the cold season, it also makes work easier in the spring and protects plants from freezing. Start covering up your garden when the temperatures start to drop. Here are important tip on preparing your garden for winter.

Assess the design of your garden

Prior to starting your preparations, find out which plants did well and those that did not in the previous season. Fall is a suitable time to move or remove plants if they are not doing well in their present location. It is also the best time to plant bare roots shrubs, plant bulbs, trees and dividing perennials. You can also check whether your yard lacks fall blooms. If it does, you can plant several late flowering plants.

Landscape clean -up

Start cleaning up by getting rid of all the weeds. For trees and shrubs, remove all the diseased leaves. Pruning should not be done in the fall since it may encourage new growth when winter is bearing down. Moreover, get rid of non hardy bulbs on the ground. Leave the bulbs to dry under the sun for several hours and store them in a dry and cool place. It is good to have a compost bin to dispose dried leaves and cuttings. This makes nutrient rich manure for the next period. Avoid throwing diseased cuttings or weeds in the compost as this will cause a lot of problems.

Cut back perennials

Most perennials need cutting back to approximately 6-8 inches over the ground. Nevertheless, some perennials look nice during winter, if you are unsure, you can leave them and see whether you like their look during winter. In addition, seed heads of a few perennials look great and provide food for the birds in winter. Most perennials look messy and tired over the cold season therefore, you should do a cut back in the fall to ensure your garden looks tidy.

Winter mulching

Mulching protects vegetation from radical temperature changes in the soil. Shielding plants from extreme cold helps to prevent soil erosion. However, mulching should not be done too early as it can encourage pests and diseases. You should wait until after the initial frost when the ground is freezing. Mulch such as pine needles, pine boughs, dried leaves and shredded bark will provide sufficient layer to protect the softer plants. Plants growing in containers should be moved indoors but if the containers are too heavy and big, you can shield the container with a wrap and cover up the soil with enough coat of mulch.

Watering

Watering your garden before freezing of the ground is a great idea. Even with snowfall, winter might be very harsh and dry for most shrubs and trees. Consequently, it is good to water the plants thoroughly prior to winter. These are just a few ways of preparing for winter.
